Gong the cultural history of rhythm
The Gong is a musical instrument made of metal casting and is native to many areas of Southeast Asia. The shape of the Gong Kob (Frog Drum) varies from region to region. It had been found underground in many areas of mainland Asia and in some of the penisular islands of Southeast Asia. One very important example of the Gong Kob was found in 1924 in a town called Dong Son, located on the right side of the Song Ma River in Thanh-hoa province of Southern Vietnam.
The Gong Kob has three essential elements, the top is circular with a gentle curved shape and nice decoration, the middle part is a barrel shape and the lower section expands out at both sides. The Southeast Asian people believe that using the Gong Kob in their worship will bring fertilization to their community and the people still use the Gong Kob in the Royal ploughing ceremony held before the rainy season. The Gong Kob is also symbolic of the owner?s wealth.
